Cosatu threatens to withdraw labour on 100% taxi loading capacity

The Congress of South African Trade Union (Cosatu) has threatened a “withdrawal” of its labour, should government not retract the regulations that allows taxis to operate at 100% loading capacity during short trips.
National spokesperson for Cosatu, Sizwe Pamla, says the first option will however be engagements with labour council, Nedlac.

“For now we are going to give dialogue a chance and we hope that we can achieve something out of the discussion. Of course we receive the right to mobilise because under section 77 we are allowed to mobilise and protest if we deadlock,” says Pamla.
Following a deadlock between the taxi industry and government over the Level 3 lockdown regulations, a decision was reached that minibus taxis could now load 100 % of their passengers on trips shorter than 200 km.
The government also allowed interprovincial travel.
However, strict safety measures will have to be adhered to by the industry, that include the opening of windows to allow for ventilation.
This came after the industry rejected government's initial Covid-19 bailout of R1.13 billion.
