Court halts bid to stop SASSA strike

An urgent application by the
Department of Social Development for an
interdict against striking South African
Social Security Agency (SASSA) workers was
struck off the roll by the Labour Court on Wednesday.

The Public Servants Association's (PSA) Tahir Maepa says the court ordered the parties to resume wage negotiations within 7 days.
Maepa says workers will be going back to the office tomorrow and it will be business as usual
Meanwhile, SASSA national spokesperson, Kgomotso Diseko, says the department welcomes the ruling by the court and will abide by the order.

The department approached the court last week arguing that the strike will impact Sassa's capacity to administer the payment of grants.
Workers affiliated with PSA are demanding salary increases.
Court proceedings were postponed on Tuesday after the legal representatives failed to provide details on whether the workers fall under essential services.
SASSA has, meanwhile, also been experiencing technical glitches, resulting in a delay in the payments of some social grants.
