Court postpones animal cruelty case against Thandi Modise

The animal cruelty case against National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise was postponed on Friday after she could make it to court.

Modise, who presided over President Cyril Ramaphosa’s State of the Nation Address in Cape Town on Thursday evening, was expected to appear in the Potchefstroom Regional Court.

Lobby group AfriForum’s private prosecution unit announced last year that it was going to prosecute Modise on behalf of the National Animal Protection Association privately.

It is alleged that Modise left her farm unattended, causing over 50 pigs and other animals to die due to lack of water and food.

Other animals include geese, ducks, sheep, and goats which were left without food and water.

The NSPCA had to euthanize more than 100 animals.

Andrew Leask,  an investigator at AfriForum’s private investigating unit, says Modise's attorney's argued that she had parliamentary duties to attend to.

"Because of SONA, which took place last night. However, she doesn't have any privileges set out in the powers, privileges and immunities act as an accused in the matter. However we understand the importance of that and have agreed to a postponement."

Leask says a warrant of arrest was issued for Modise after she failed to appear in court.

"It has been held over until the 22nd of July when the next appearance will be."
