The High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday ruled in favour of AfriForum’s application for matric results to be published in the media.

The lobby group turned to the courts after the Department of Basic Education announced it would not publish the much-anticipated matric results in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).

AfriForum’s Natasha Venter says they welcome the court ruling.

“The organisation is confident that the matric results can be published and that former matriculants will be able to get their results in the newspapers and on media platforms.”

Venter adds they believe the publishing of results is in the public interest.

“It is in the public interest that this information is shared on public platforms and that is one of the reasons why we brought this application. We are delighted that the court agreed with us in this argument.”

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for department Terrence Khala says they will abide the Tuesday’s court ruling.

“This means that the department will make available the results to stakeholders who requested access. The conditions of the court ruling must be taken into account in line with the provisions of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.”
