Covid-19 deaths breach 18 000

Covid-19 related deaths in South Africa have increased to more than 18 000.
Statistics released by Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize show that a total of 18 028 have succumbed to the virus since the beginning of the pandemic.
Mkhize has confirmed another 165 deaths reported over various provinces.

He adds however that the high number of fatalities is also due to provinces auditing the number of deaths.
The country's cumulative cases stand at 694 537, with 1 178 new infections identified.
The country’s recoveries now stand at 625 574 – a recovery rate of 90%.
