South Africa’s Covid-19 positivity rate has dropped yet again.
It’s the second consecutive day the country has seen a lower number.
The positivity rate now sits at 5.3%, a drop of 0.5% from the 5.8% the previous day.
This according to stats from the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).
“Today the institute reports 1,558 new COVID-19 cases that have been identified in South Africa, which brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases to 3,702,042,” said the NICD on Friday evening.
Most new cases were recorded in Gauteng which accounted for 36, followed by Western Cape with 28%, while Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 18%.
The remaining six provinces accounted for less than 5% each of the new cases.
Close to 40 Covid-related fatalities were reported.
“Due to the ongoing audit exercise by the National Department of Health (DoH), there may be a backlog of COVID-19 mortality cases reported,”noted the NICD.
“Today, the DoH reports 39 deaths and of these, 6 occurred in the past 24 – 48 hours.”
This brings the total fatalities to 99,868.
