DA to approach Masutha over Shaik's medical parole

The Democratic Alliance (DA) will approach the Justice Minister Michael Masutha over Schabir Shaik's medical parole.

The party's James Selfe says they will write to the minister to request him to go to court to clarify the parole granted to President Jacob Zuma's former financial advisor.

"Mr Shaik was released under the old Act and it said that he could only be released if he was in the final stage of any terminal disease or condition in order to die a consolatory and dignified death.

"The problem is that eight years on he is still very healthy and does not have terminal disease or condition. And the consequence is that it makes a mockery of the whole medical parole system."

Last week, Masutha gave a written response a question from the DA over Shaik's medical condition.

Masutha said Shaik's condition remains terminal, even though he has not been checked by a Department of Correctional Services official since his release from prison in March 2009.

Shaik has refused to comment on the matter at this stage.
