Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen led a crime awareness rally outside the Soshanguve Police Station on Saturday, 27 January.

The community of Soshanguve has for many months lamented the high rate of crime in the area.

The area was thrust back into the spotlight in recent weeks following a mass shooting that claimed the lives of an off-duty police officer, a 14-year-old girl, and two others.

Steenhuisen will be accompanied by DA Gauteng Provincial Leader and Premier Candidate Solly Msimanga, Tshwane Regional Chairperson Crezane Bosch, as well as Tshwane Executive Mayor Cilliers Brink.

“The DA has a plan to rescue South Africa from the scourge of lawlessness and wanton criminality, to create safer streets and communities for all South Africans. Communities such as Soshanguve deserve to live and raise their children in a safe environment, that only the DA can bring,” read the party’s statement about the rally.

Five people have been arrested after they were linked to the New Year’s Day shooting.

Tshepo Mosemeni, Sipho Kgomo, George Nyathi, and Sizwe Msibi appeared before the Soshanguve Magistrates Court where their case was postponed to 30 January for a formal bail application.

A fifth suspect appeared before the Pretoria North Magistrates Court on a charge of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.
