Makhura was speaking at the provincial headquarters of the African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg.

"If you were to ask me, I'll it is a desperate election tactic... it is frivolous," says Makhura.

ANC provincial secretary, Hope Papo, says the motion of no confidence by the opposition party has nothing to do with governance.

"It will be firmly defeated because we think it is a frivolous motion," says Papo.

The DA has tabled the motion due to what it believes to have been Makhura’s mishandling of the Life Esidimeni tragedy in which more than 140 mental health patients died.

The motion is set to be debated later this month.

"The individual tasked with oversight in our province, Premier Makhura, refused to hear and refused to see, even when presented with overwhelming evidence of the human disaster that was occurring. Perhaps because it was inconvenient, perhaps because it was easier to leave the difficult decisions to others,” the DA says.
