DA: Removal of Tshwane speaker ‘illegal’
Updated | By Jacaranda FM News
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is challenging the legality of a motion of no confidence vote passed in Tshwane council speaker Katlego Mathebe on Thursday.
The DA alleges that the African National Congress (ANC) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) illegally elected an acting speaker to preside over the vote.
The EFF’s Obakeng Ramabodu assumed the position after DA councillors refused to participate in the vote.
Gauteng leader John Moody described the opposition parties’ conduct as a coup d'état.

“As the DA we will oppose this illegal appointment in the council chambers and will also take this matter to court, as is, we are already busy with our attorneys and the legal process is underway,” says Moody.
The ANC’s Kgosi Maepa believes Mathebe is serving her political allies – a claim Moody has denied.
“The ANC and the EFF are nothing else but rogues and they are putting our democracy under threat.”
