The commission was established to look into the feasibility of free higher education following last years' Fees Must Fall protests.

Yesterday the South African Union of Students warned warning that student protests could flare up again if the commission into higher education fees does not conclude by September.

The union also expressed its concern over the financial impact that delays could have on students.

The union's president Avela Mjajubana made submissions before the so-called fees commission on the first day of public hearings.

The commission was established to look into the feasibility of free higher education after violent student protests rocked the country last year.

Representatives from Wits also made submissions, maintaining that the only way to address the issue of study costs was to take a hybrid approach.

The department of higher education argued that under funding placed institutions under great pressures to hick fees.
