De Lille vouches for former city manager

Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has come out in support of former city manager Achmat Ebrahim, amid claims of maladministration.

Ebrahim resigned after he was charged by the City of Cape Town's Council for allegedly failing to inform officials about several claims of tender irregularities.

The City Council commissioned law firm Bowman Gilfillan to investigate the allegations.

It's understood that the findings also implicate de Lille. The report found Ebrahim hushed up the alleged irregularities on de Lille's orders, but she has labelled the allegations against Ebrahim as baseless.

"He further stated that in terms of the ongoing investigations he furnish my office with copies of all the evidence filed as it pertains to his involvement in these allegations and a copy has already been sent to Bowman's. Which clearly show that the allegations against him are baseless," said De Lille.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape has welcomed his resignation and called on Ebrahim to assist with the investigations.

Provincial DA leader Bonginkosi Madikizela says the needs of residents need to be prioritised.
