Fifteen people were killed in a head-on collision in Empangeni on Saturday evening.

The crash on the N2 involved a car and a minibus taxi and led to the highway being shut after the vehicles caught fire.

Paramedics say eleven of the people who died had been travelling in the minibus while the remaining four who lost their lives had been in the sedan.

"Several patients were treated by paramedics before being transported to hospital. Authorities responded to the scene and police are investigating the exact cause of the crash," says KZN emergency services spokesperson Rob McKenzie.

The crash occurred just hours after seven people were killed in another horror crash in central KZN.

A bakkie and a car collided on R614 in Appelsbosch on Saturday morning, leaving one other person seriously hurt.

The KZN Transport Department's Mluleki Mntungwa has urged road users to act responsibly. He says there are a number of roadblocks planned for the provinces roads throughout the holidays.

"These roadblocks will continue across the province and the MEC will continue to interact with road users at beaches and all other areas of entertainment."
