Defend Our Democracy wants Ramaphosa to show more urgency on electricity crisis
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
Civil society movement Defend Our Democracy has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the nation on daily basis on the crisis engulfing power utility Eskom.
South Africans have been subjected to daily blackouts over the past few weeks as Eskom struggles to recover from a recent strike by workers and a general lack of generation capacity.
The movement's spokesperson Duduestang Mmeti says they want an urgent, integrated, well synchronised, and credible plan of action by government to address the problems in the short to medium term.
"The ‘radical transparency’ is required to deepen public trust, with daily communication by President Cyril Ramaphosa and the cabinet on the crisis, and the implementation of the action plan to address it.
"This plan should have clear deliverables, and timeframes and indicate who would be accountable for its implementation and success or failure, and how this accountability will be exercised."
Mmeti says there is also a need to bring on board renewable energy.
"There is a need to remove the red tape and immediately allow for the implementation of projects in the pipeline renewable, as well as those by independent power producers – to bring more capacity to the grid."
