Veteran South African anti-apartheid activist and Rivonia trialist Denis Goldberg has died at the age of 87.
Goldberg, who was tried alongside former president Nelson Mandela and imprisoned for 22 years, died at his home near Cape Town on Wednesday.
Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Sello Hatang says Goldberg strived for a more equal and poverty-free society.
"The Nelson Mandela Foundation is saddened by the loss of Mr Goldberg. When I last saw him in February he was certain to explain that we have to do more to ensure that we build a more equal society.”
Hatang hopes the country will use the Covid-19 pandemic to reflect on the country’s future and what still needs to be done to ensure a better life for the majority of South Africans.
"I am hoping that we will grab this moment and ask ourselves what more can we do to ensure that we build a more equal and poverty-free society. In his honour, the Nelson Mandela Foundation will continue to work hard to build that society and ensure that no one is left behind.”
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation has also sent its condolences to the Goldberg family.
The foundation's Neeshan Balton says Goldberg will be remembered for his selflessness, bravery and commitment to democracy and non-racialism.
"He spends 22 years in jail and upon his release in 1985, he embedded himself in anti-apartheid movement ensuring that there was global pressure for change in SA. He remained active and outspoken on issues of corruption and racism in the country.
“His dedication to democracy is something that we will always remember.”
