Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi says the deputy principal at a primary school in Ekurhuleni has been shot dead in his office.

It's understood a group of criminals entered the Edalinceba Primary School in Duduza claiming to have an appointment with the deputy.

Lesufi is en route to the school.

"It is with great sadness to inform you of a deputy principal of Edalinceba Primary School in Duduza who was shot dead in his office at school at about 11:00 this morning," says a statement from the provincial education department.

Lesufi says the name of the deceased cannot be released until the family has been notified.

Netcare911 spokesperson Nick Dollman says the 55-year-old man had been shot several times.

"Reports from the scene allege that several shots were fired in the administration block. Paramedics attended to a 55-year-old man who had been shot more than once. Tragically, the victim sustained severe injuries and died prior to the arrival of paramedics," Dollman says.

With public concern mounting with regards to safety at schools, Lesufi says cameras are being installed in all new schools.
