‘Dire’ water shortages at several Vhembe hospitals
Updated | By Lesetja Makhura
The Health Department in Limpopo Health says five hospitals and a number of clinics in the Vhembe district are facing dire water shortages.
The department says this is due to ongoing community protests over the water crisis in the Thumalela municipal area.
Affected hospitals include Tshilidzini, Donald Fraser, Louis Trichadt and Malamulele.
"The protesting communities have allegedly destroyed water infrastructure leading to these facilities. They have also closed the Nandoni Dam which is the main water source since Monday," says the department’s spokesperson Neil Shikwambana.
He says the closure of the Nandoni Dam is also impacting the ability of to provide water tankers to communities.
"The department is worried that the closure of the dam and the destruction of infrastructure coincides with the scourge of cholera that is confronting other provinces of the country.
"The department is working with all stakeholders to try and prevent the disease, but community-induced water shortages will compromise the efforts."
