Domestic worker assault case postponed

Andre van Deventer appeared on charges of common assault and crimen injuria.

 

Prosecutor Andy Hess said the trial could not proceed because the court roll was too full. She said the State had no further witnesses.

The trial was postponed until Friday, when the defence was expected to call his girlfriend at the time, Mariechin Pienaar, as a witness.

Pienaar's domestic worker Gloria Kente, 50, previously testified about how Van Deventer allegedly assaulted and swore at her in the home they all shared in Table View last June.

She testified at the time that when she asked Van Deventer to look after Pienaar's child while she took a shower, she said she heard him shouting that they were "paying this kaffir R2400 to look after the child".

She alleged he grabbed her by her pyjamas, insulted her and spat in her face.

Kente has also applied to the Equality Court in Cape Town for R100,000 in damages and an unconditional apology from Van Deventer.

The couple have said they will testify to a different version which does not include assault.

Judgment in the equality court matter is expected on 24 October.
