Driving schools block N1 amid anger over licence booking system
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
A convoy of cars from Driving Schools Association blocked the busy N1 highway between Centurion and Midrand on Thursday as part of a protest against the NaTis booking system.
The protest led to heavy delays between Pretoria and Johannesburg on Thursday afternoon.
Police used stun grenades to disperse the group after they brought the traffic to a standstill between Olifantsfontein Road and New Road in Midrand.
"They have been driving very slow on the freeway, from the information received they are going to join another association in Sandton and from there they will go to the Road Traffic Management Cooperation (RTMC) offices to protest against the online booking system. We have officers who are monitoring the situation." said JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla.
National Driving school Association of South Africa President Abel Msiza said they will shut down all the traffic departments in Gauteng.
"We are protesting about the online booking that is not working, the RTMC decided to change the online booking without consulting the driving schools. Now driving schools cannot make bookings on behalf of their clients. That's why we want the RTMC to go back to its old system, they agreed to remove the One Time Password (OTP) system and now they brought it back."
