Dunga, who is the EFF’s Gauteng chairperson, was removed from his position last month and replaced by the ANC’s Jongizizwe Dlabathi.

Briefing the media on Wednesday, Xhakaza said the decision was solely based on Dunga’s performance.

"It was performance-related. We did indicate that if you don’t perform, it doesn’t matter who you are, as long as you serve in the mayoral committee, whether you are a secretary of the party, chairperson of the party, or something else in the last two years. We have to put everybody under the new discipline.

“We have certain standards that we subscribe to as we do our work. If you don’t do that, then we have to request that you make a way," added Xhakaza.

He also accused Dunga of failing to attend important meetings.

"We went to strategic planning, a lekgotla of the mayoral committee, but he didn't come. He was absent without any apology.

It is a cultural issue. We went to the first mayoral committee, he didn’t come; it was continuing," he said.

Xhakaza remained tight-lipped about the future of the alliance between the ANC and the EFF in the city.

While acknowledging that the partnership has faced challenges, Xhakaza said the region would be guided by the ANC’s national leadership on the way forward.

"On Saturday, the national will be coming to brief the ANC structures in the Ekhurhuleni region. There will be an engagement on the way forward," he said.
