A 49-year-old Eastern Cape woman has been handed a sentence of 17 years behind bars to beating a 19-month-old toddler to death in July 2020.

Ncedeni Qwabe was in a relationship with little Qhamokuhle Ndziba’s uncle at the time.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the couple was taking care of the child while her mother worked in Cape Town.
Qwabe initially claimed to have beaten the toddler with a cloth for spilling water on the floor.
But Qwabe’s story changed during cross-examination.
“During cross-examination by the prosecutor, Advocate Louis Sinclair, she revealed that she beat the child up with a peach tree stick,” said NPA spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani.
“Qhamokuhle died during the evening due to internal injuries and blood loss.”
Qwabe’s sentence was handed down on Thursday.
