Education groups demand reinstatement of school nutrition programme
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
Section27 and Equal Education have threatened legal action if the Department of Basic Education does not reinstate its school nutrition programme.

Earlier this week Minister Angie Motshekga confirmed the programme would have to be phased in as the different grades return to school.
"On Monday, the minister said they are struggling to manage this new environment and so they want to phase in the nutrition programme. That is entirely unacceptable because children would normally get a meal at school and the department had undertaken to provide those meals," says Section27 spokesperson Nontsikelelo Mpulo.

Mpulo says a lack of nutrition has a disruptive effect on schooling.
"We have a mandate from three schools in Limpopo and Equal Education. We are preparing to head to court if the department does not reinstitute this programme as of the 8th of June."
