Eight people were killed when two vehicles collided head-on on the R618 between Vryheid and Nongoma, the KwaZulu-Natal transport department said on Sunday.

Seven people died on impact in the accident on Saturday night, said department spokesman Kwanele Ncalane.
The other person died while paramedics were trying to remove her from the wreckage, as she was trapped.
"The deceased, six adults and two youths, are said to be all from Hlobane under aBaqulusi Local Municipality," said Ncalane.
Those injured were rushed to Grace Hospital in Pietermaritzburg.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport Willies Mchunu expressed shock at the accident and urged motorists to be vigilant on the road.
I am deeply saddened.... We forever urge people to be vigilant and observe the rules of the road but clearly the message is ignored by some road users," he said.
On behalf of the Government of KwaZulu-Natal I would like to send my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased."
He said traffic enforcement operations would be intensified as the festive season approached.
