Limpopo police have arrested eleven suspects for allegedly smuggling illicit cigarettes from Zimbabwe to South Africa.
The men were intercepted while travelling in a convoy of ten vehicles on the N1 from Musina to Louis Trichardt on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Motlafela Mojapelo says the suspects were arrested following a high-speed chase.
"The team caught up with the said vehicles along the Piesanghoek road after the convoy took a detour to avoid police detection. Five vehicles were then cornered with the help of members of the Loius Trichardt Farm Watch, the other five managed to evade arrest.
"The suspects were found to be undocumented Zimbabwean nationals who initially tried to engage in a fistfight with the members, but they were ultimately subdued and apprehended.”
The five vehicles were loaded with illicit cigarettes worth over R420 000.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
They are facing charges of dealing with and possession of illicit cigarettes, contravention of Immigration Act, reckless and negligent drivers, driving without license and resisting arrest.
