Embattled Mangaung metro placed under administration

The embattled Mangaung metro in the Free State, which includes Bloemfontein, has been placed under administration.
The decision was made by the provincial government to save the municipality from financial collapse..
Premier Sefora Ntombela’s spokesperson Tiisetso Makhele says a number of interventions were put in place to save the city but none yielded positive results.
"The Free State provincial government has on a monthly basis been having meetings with the municipality, both the political leadership and administration leadership. It has provided technical support and advice on a regular basis," says Makhele.
"So the decision to place the municipality under administration was taken after a robust process of interaction between ourselves, the National Treasury as well as the municipality so it has been a process. We took that decision based on our realisation that the fiscal position of the municipality is not going to improve."
An administrator will be appointed during a council meeting next week.
"The executive council has appointed a team executed by the MEC for Finance, MEC for Cooperative Governance and the director-general to see to it that the process is implemented," Makhele adds.
