Emergency services remain on high alert in storm-hit Western Cape
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says all disaster management and emergency services teams remain on high alert as storms continue to lash the province.
The Provincial Disaster Management team met on Monday morning to assess the severity of the situation.
The South African Weather Service issued a warning for gale-force winds and heavy rain in large parts of the Western Cape, including a level 9 warning for the Overberg and southern Cape Winelands.
As part of the safety precaution, some public schools have been closed.
Winde urged residents in low-lying areas to avoid travelling and movement that could put their lives in danger.
“We have got flooding happening in some of the parts of Overberg at the moment, the Buffeljags (River) low-level bridge in Swellendam. So, localised flooding, nothing major at the moment, but the rain is falling. Once again, we urge people to be safe.
“Don’t take any chances in any of our low-laying areas.”
