Energy Dept to probe petroleum products supply after refinery explosion
Updated | By Gaopalelwe Phalaetsile
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy says it has embarked on an investigation into the supply of petroleum products to South Africa.
This comes after the massive explosion and fire at the Engen Oil Refinery in Wentworth in Durban on Friday morning.
Seven people were treated for smoke inhalation with residents of near-by flats reporting structural damage.
The occupants of one of the flats also had to be evacuated after it caught fire.
"The existing import infrastructure will be used to supplement the petroleum products supply. The Department is relieved that none of the workers were seriously injured. We further recognise that the incident has caused anxiety in the surrounding communities, as would be expected," reads the statement released by the Department on Saturday morning.

The department says the explosion is also being investigated.
“In line with the provisions of the occupational health and safety act, the relevant government structures are on the scene to conduct investigations on the cause of the incident.”
