Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown says she instructed the Eskom board to overturn the decision this morning.

"The Inter-ministerial Committee (IMC) on Eskom met with the board today. This is after we have had several engagements with the board. Collectively, looking at all the facts at our disposal, and in the interest of the country and good governance, I have thus directed the Eskom board to rescind the decision to reinstate Mr Molefe as the Eskom Group CEO," says Brown.

Brown says the board must provide her within at least two names within the executive to act as CEO.

"I intend appointing an acting Group CEO within the next 48 hours to ensure continuity," says Brown.

Justice Minister Michael Mashutha says the board underwent the wrong procedure to accept Molefe's decision to go on early retirement.

Masutha says the board handled Molefe's departure as a retrenchment and not a retirement.

"The IMC also met with the board where the concessions were confirmed, but the board was of the view that the mistakes were made in good faith. The IMC is of the view that both mistakes could have been corrected administratively and not by the board opting to reinstate Mr Molefe," says Masutha.
