Eskom confirms explosion at Medupi plant

Power utility Eskom says it is investigating the cause of an explosion at the recently completed Medupi Power Station in Lephalale.

The six unit power plant in Limpopo was completed a week ago. 

 

The explosion happened ta unit 4 on Saturday night and is believed to have caused unit 5 to trip. 

 

In a statement released on Monday, Eskom said no injuries had been reported. 

 

“All employees and contractors have been accounted for.

 

“Emergency services attended to seven colleagues requiring treatment for shock,” the statement added.

 

Unit 4 was on a short-term outage when the explosion happened.

 

“All work on the unit was suspended with immediate effect. This included the suspension of all permits to work on the plant until further notice.

 

“Preparation for the return to service of Medupi unit 5 is currently in progress,” Eskom said. 

 

The impact of the explosion on the national grid is unclear.
