Eskom eases load shedding to stage 2
Updated | By Anastasi Mokgobu
Eskom CEO André de Ruyter has announced that load shedding will be downgraded from stage 3 to stage 2 from midday on Thursday.
The embattled power utility says the power cuts are now scheduled to end at 5am on Friday.
De Ruyter briefed the media on Thursday morning on the continuous rolling blackouts.
While some units at Medupi, Kriel and Duvha power stations are at risk of shutting down, the utility has recovered enough capacity to reduce load shedding.
“We are going to be releasing a unit at the Drakensberg, unit 3 is going to be out on scheduled maintenance and again the signal is that we don’t compromise on planned maintenance. We want to ensure that we take care of our assets as best as we can and this outage will last about 100 days and that will reduce output from the Drakensberg by 333 megawatts.
“This good recovery in the system has enabled us to currently reduce load shedding to stage 2 from stage 3. We are going to go down to stage 2 at midday today and we will maintain stage 2 until 5am tomorrow (Friday). We will then be in a position to lift load shedding, as by then the system will have sufficiently recovered that we can continue to operate and meet normal demand.”
