Eskom ramps up load shedding to stage 4 on Monday
Updated | By Nokukhanya N Mntambo
Despite previously announcing plans to implement stage 3 load shedding, Eskom has had to ramp up power cuts due to capacity shortages.
The power utility is set to implement stage 4 power cuts on Monday.
Unit 2 of the Kusile Power Station tripped earlier in the day but later returned to service. It is only expected to load to full capacity on Monday night.
A unit at Arnot Power Station was also taken offline for repairs.
Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha says 1 904 MW from the power grid is offline due to planned maintenance, while another 17 255MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.
"This added loss of capacity regretfully requires Eskom to increase load shedding to Stage 4 from 17:00 until 22:00 tonight," says Mantshantsha.
"Eskom will continue to closely monitor the system, adjust and communicate any changes as may be necessary."
The country has been battling constant rolling blackouts since the beginning of the month.
