Eskom mulls next step after dismissal of load shedding appeal bid

Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says that the government is considering its next steps after the High Court in Pretoria dismissed their application for leave to appeal against an earlier ruling on the rolling blackouts.

The ruling compels Eskom to provide continuous power supply to various public institutions, including police stations, public health facilities, and schools.

On Monday, Ramokgopa provided an update on the Energy Action Plan.

"What is not in doubt is the fact that there is a need for us to ensure that the identified critical public spaces or institutions required an uninterrupted power supply for them to be able to provide the kind of services that are envisaged in the constitution,” the minister admitted.

The country has not experienced any planned power cuts for 54 consecutive days.

Ramokgopa said the utility had spent only R1.4 billion on diesel between April 1 and last week Thursday.

This is a decrease from the R5.2 billion spent during the same period in 2023.

"Essentially we have seen a drop of 78%, and that is at the back of these men and women at various power stations making it possible that we save this money.

“Eskom can redirect this capital somewhere so that we are able to continue to sweat this asset, the fleet of the generating units that Eskom has installed.”
