EUSA slams move by Western Cape to only register some teachers for Covid jabs

The Educators’ Union of South Africa (Eusa) is unhappy with a move by the Western Cape to start registering some teachers for Covid-19 jabs.

Teachers over the age of 40 will be eligible to register for the vaccine in the Western Cape.

The province’s Department of Education has published a link which allows teachers and educational support staff to register for the vaccination process between 17 and 25 June.

But EUSA's André de Bruyn says all teachers should be eligible for the vaccine.

“It is important that we protect our teachers and support staff at schools. We cannot go, according to age, because Covid-19 does not differentiate between those who are 30 or those who are 50. We need everybody to have access to the vaccines at any stage or as soon as possible.

“We need our teachers and support staff to have access to the vaccines so that they have some sort of protection especially now that the DBE wants to bring about primary schools into full capacity and that is going to be a huge catastrophe because it throws social distancing out the window.”

It’s expected that 500 000 Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be set aside for teachers across the country to be inoculated during phase two.

From next month, all primary school pupils will be expected to be in class every day until the end of the academic year.

This in spite of the rapidly growing Covid-19 infections in various parts of the country.
