All seven, including a 1-year-old girl and a heavily pregnant woman, were shot dead in their family home in Jimmy Jones in the Vhembe District.

The man accused of the murders is 52-year-old Azwidohwi Ndou.

Family spokesperson Tendo Mulaudzi said the shooting spree sent chills down their spines.

“We are trying best we can to cope with this situation and to face this situation that we find ourselves in.

“We are also making funeral arrangements and we can appreciate all the help that we can get. So far, we have received help from the Social development who have sent social workers to help us through this time.

“The local municipality has also visited out home to show that they are supporting us and we will welcome anyone who know that they can help us in any way that they can,” Mulaudzi added.

Ndou, a nurse by profession, was arrested on Saturday afternoon and made his first court appearance on Tuesday.

He was remanded in custody until January 5.

It’s understood the shooting was sparked by a dispute over the family home.

It’s unclear if he will apply for bail or if the court will order mental evaluation for the 52-year-old man following claims among the Malamulele community that the man was unwell.

But the family believe he was of sound mind when he opened fire on his relatives.

“Many years ago, probably more than 20 years ago, there was a time that it was said that he was mentally unstable but we do not know to what extent, we do not know if any diagnosis was made. It is just rumours that we are hearing.

“Presently he is mentally stable, he is of sound mind and he has been working as a matron, as a nurse for years,” Mulaudzi added.

A memorial service will be held for the victims at the house where they were killed on Thursday.

They will then be laid to rest on Saturday.
