President Jacob Zuma has released the Heher Commission report into the feasibility of free higher education.

The president established the commission in January 2016 – following nationwide student protests demanding free tertiary education.

The commission was chaired by Justice Jonathan Arthur Heher.

There has been mounting pressure for the president to release the report after receiving it at the end of August.

President Zuma has not yet made a pronouncement following receiving the report.

He says he released the report while the relevant ministers “process” the document.

Some of the recommendations made by the commission include the scrapping of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme as well as government increasing its expenditure on higher education and training to at least 1% of the GDP.
