Ferdi Barnard out of prison
Updated | By Neo Motloung and Thabo Tshabalala
Apartheid-era hitman Ferdi Barnard was released from prison
on Tuesday morning.
It comes three weeks after the announcement by the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Michael Masutha, that Barnard would be released on full parole.
Barnard was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998 after being convicted on charges that included murder, attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm.
One of the two murders was the 1989 killing of anti-apartheid activist and Wits academic David Webster.
Department of Correctional Services spokesperson, Singabakho Nxumalo, says Barnard is under community corrections.
Nxumalo could not divulge the specific parole conditions for Barnard, saying it's between the parolee and the Department of Correctional Services.
"The parole conditions will stipulate exactly when he is supposed to report or when our official will visit him," says Nxumalo.
