The Border Management Authority (BMA) has issued eight fines to bus companies that were found transporting illegal migrants into South Africa.
The fines were issued at various ports of entry to South Africa during the Easter weekend.
BMA Commissioner Mike Masiapato briefed the media on the authority’s Easter operations on Sunday.
“Eight penalties to the value of R270 000 were issued to the bus companies. At this point, we would like to send a stern warning to all conveyancers to desist from transporting illegal migrants in and out of South Africa.”
Masiapato said the BMA, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, intercepted counterfeit cigarettes worth more than R3 million at the Lebombo border post with Mozambique.
Other interceptions include counterfeit alcohol, 272 pairs of counterfeit clothing and parts of a Toyota Hilux worth R150 000.
"Another joint law enforcement operation intercepted about 217 master cases of counterfeit cigarettes. These cases were found hidden in tomato crates and a covered false compartment on a truck,” Masiapato said.
