Forensic investigators to probe R14 million payment
Updated | By Pieter van der Merwe
Forensic investigators have been appointed to investigate the accidental payment of R14 million to a Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student.
It comes after a meeting between the university, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and the payment service provider IntelliMali.
The student, who was supposed to get a R1400 food allowance, has already spent more than R800 000 of the funds paid to her.
A preliminary investigation has meanwhile found no public funds were lost as the money belonged to the university and not NSFAS.
"IntelliMali has reimbursed WSU the full amount misappropriated by the student, from its own company finances," reads a joint statement.
While IntelliMali has laid criminal charges against the student, WSU has not taken any steps against her.
"The university has opted to await the outcomes of the forensic investigation before considering any further steps," continues the statement.
Furthermore, WSU is providing councelling to the student to ensure that she continues with her studies.
The preliminary investigation further found no other student or employees had been implicated.
