Former Joburg mayor Moerane 'alive and fighting for his life'

The ANC has yet again had to deny reports claiming former Johanesburg mayor Mpho Moerane had passed away.

Moerane was involved in a car crash in the north of Johannesburg last week.
ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe, and Moerane family spokesperson Mike Maile, addressed the media outside Milpark Hospital on Tuesday evening.
Mabe said Moerane is alive and fighting for his life.
“These are hard times for the ANC. Mpho is in here just behind us and all that we are hoping for and wishing for is that he recovers, bounces back and comes back to life and does what a caucus leader of the ANC is expected to do.
"We know that Mpho is a fighter and are hopeful that he is going to bounce back much stronger."
The crash came a few days before the ANC's regional conference in Johannesburg, where Moerane was expected to contest for the position of chairperson.

But Mabe said the conference is of little concern to the party while Moerane’s life is on the line.
“We are not worried about congresses now because the life of a comrade supersedes a congress. A congress only elects you to discharge a responsibility. We can never measure how we live according to how much we are affirmed by congress, so it’s unfair.
"Our call for you in the media is to at least display maximum compassion this time around. The life of a person cannot be weighed against a congress, it's unfair.”
