Four killed in Southern Cape fires

The City of Cape Town says four people, including two toddlers and a baby, have died in the wildfires in the George region.

Residents in the George area have been dumped into tragedy after the wildfires ripping through their communities claimed its first victims.
Two toddlers and a baby are among those who died on Monday.
Provincial Environmental Affairs spokesperson James-Brent Styan says firefighters are working around the clock to extinguish the fires.
“This evening we are sad to announce that there have been four fatalities due to the fire. It was part of a secondary fire that spread to the in the Karatara area.”
Authorities started evacuating residents of George on Monday due to a raging fire on the Outeniqua mountain range.

More than 300 firefighters have been deployed.
“We are fighting a big fire. It is spread for quite a distance. Evictions in the area are still underway and are progressing well.”
