The South African Police Services (SAPS) has confirmed the death of four of its members and a civilian who is believed to have been in the same vehicle the police were traveling in.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Tembinkosi Kinana says the four police officers were on their way to Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.
“The four officers were returning from the Chris Hani District where they conducted crime prevention operation and awareness campaigns with communities and schools. The deceased members aged between 25 and 35 were stationed at the Alfred Nzo and OR Tambo districts respectively,” says Kinana.
The cause of the crash is being investigated.
“Police have registered cases of culpable homicide for investigation. Details regarding the cause of the accident will form part of the investigation,” he said.
The provincial commissioner has ordered a speedy investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
“As SAPS management we are shattered by these sad news. We do not need this and the untimely heart-breaking departure of our young and upcoming leaders has left us dumbfounded,” Kinana says.
