The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has arrested a police officer in the Free State for attempted murder.
At the time of his arrest, the protector was escorting the Free State MEC responsible for Treasury MEC to an event.
The 49-year-old warrant officer allegedly shot at a man whom he claims assaulted him at a tavern in Bloemfontein.
Ipid spokesperson Robbie Raburabu said the officer was arrested last week.
"Vusumuzi Makhaza allegedly had a fight with a fellow patron in the tavern in Kagisanong, Bloemfontein, on 16 September. He was allegedly hit with a beer bottle on the ear, and he sustained an injury.
"On the 24 September, the suspect went to a place looking for the person that attacked him seeking revenge. He found him with his girlfriend, who was carrying a 9-month-old baby in her hands, but she quickly closed the door and locked it when she saw the police officer with a firearm.”
"The suspect attempted to get access into the house. The police officer allegedly discharged his firearm, shooting at the door."
The suspect appeared in court on Monday, facing a charge of attempted murder.
He was released on warning.
