Gauteng education defends underspending
Updated | By Sinethemba Madolo
The Department of Education in Gauteng says the money not spent from its budget is mainly due to delays in invoicing from implementing agencies, suppliers and changes in human capital.
On Thursday, the Democratic Alliance (DA) reported that the department had failed to spend R1 billion of its allocated money.
The department's spokesperson Steve Mabona says it was given R50 billion during the 2018/19 budget, of which 98% had been used.

Mabona says it’s inevitable that some money should be left unspent.
"The outstanding amount is mainly because of the delays in invoicing from our implementing agencies, suppliers and you have changes in human capital, matters like you have resignations and deaths.
"Some of the scholar budget transport that was unused it is due to the new schools that are being developed. In essence, it was inevitable for us to not use that 2% of our budget."
