Gauteng govt puts land & property invaders on notice

The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements has embarked on a project to evict land invaders in Allendale, north of Johannesburg.

The department, together with the City of Johannesburg, demolished illegally built structures on government-owned land on Friday.

In 2017, the city obtained a court interdict against so-called land invasions.

Department spokesperson Tahir Sema said the government is ready to approach the courts immediately should anyone challenge the evictions.

“Members of the public are warned to resist temptations to illegally invade land, and any government property, as this will only result in them losing their hard-earned money and investments during evictions.

“Government will not hesitate to evict those who invade land and property. Communities are encouraged to report the illegal occupation of land and houses to local law enforcement authorities.”

The issue of hijacked buildings in the Joburg CBD hit the headlines last year after several fires swept through the derelict structures.

In August last year, a fire ripped through the abandoned Usindiso Building in Marshalltown, killing more than 70 people.
