The Gauteng Provincial Government has confirmed the precautionary suspension of nine senior officials on the recommendation of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).
Three officials work for the Department of Health while the other six work for the Department of Infrastructure Development.
Spokesperson in the office of the premier, Vuyo Mhaga, says the SIU has uncovered serious irregularities in the awarding of contractors for the refurbishment of the Anglo Gold Ashanti Hospital in the West Rand.
The hospital was donated to the Gauteng government by the Anglo Gold Ashanti mining company on the condition that it be refurbished in order to add more beds during the coronavirus pandemic.
“On December 2021 the SIU made referrals to the Gauteng Provincial Government to institute disciplinary action against the nine senior managers who were implicated in irregularities in the awarding of contractors for the refurbishment of the Anglo Gold Ashanti Hospital, which was one of the hospitals earmarked for the treatment of Covid- 19.
The SIU has also made referrals to other state institutions for further investigation into the conduct of the implicated government officials and contractors,” says Mhaga.
He says the disciplinary proceedings against them will commence as soon as charges are finalised.
