The country is in the grip of a second wave of Covid-19 infections, with Gauteng one of the provinces showing a spike in Covid-19 cases.

Recently the ‘Dinho Convoy’ video went viral, showing young people partying in large numbers and not adhering to the Covid-19 regulations at the Daspoort tunnel, west of Pretoria.

Gauteng provincial spokesperson Thabo Masebe says the large number of illegal gatherings is a concern.

“We have seen quite a few videos posted on social media networks, showing people partying, others breaking the law, because people can’t just go close a road and party, park their cars and in one instance, they actually closed a tunnel.

“That kind of behaviour is only going to cause problems for the people of the province. We appeal to people, especially young people, to behave responsibly. This festive season, because of Covid-19, we can’t have a normal festive season full of parties and gatherings.”

Masebe says the police will be out in large numbers over the festive season.

“We will be all out to ensure that there is compliance with the regulations, we will not tolerate anybody breaking the law. Anyone who is found to be breaking the law, they will face tough action from the police and other law enforcement authorities.

“We will not tolerate any risky behaviour that will increase the spread of Covid-19.”
