The unit, however, wouldn't confirm reports that they are investigating the head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, Robert McBride.

Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed that Hawks boss in Gauteng, Prince Mokotedi, opened a case refused to divulge any more information.

This comes amid reports that the case is being investigated against IPID head Robert McBride, former Hawks leader Shadrack Sibiya as well as private investigator Paul O'Sullivan.

"Look, we can confirm that there is a case that has been registered on these serious allegations that are being levelled against certain senior officials in government," Mulaudzi told Jacaranda FM News.

He said the case is still under investigation.

"That matter is now being dealt with after the cases were opened yesterday - on Monday, but we won't be able to confirm who are the people concerned," Mulaudzi explained.

Earlier this year the National Prosecuting Authority dropped charges against McBride.

The case was related to an IPID report into the involvement of Hawks officials in the illegal rendition of Zimbabwean nationals in 2010.

In another bid to remove McBride as head of IPID, police minister Nathi Nhleko wrote a letter to MPs asking parliament to use its powers to remove the head of police watchdog.
