Rand Water has urged residents to use water sparingly as the system experiences severe strain that could lead to a total system collapse.

The systems in the City of Tshwane alone were below 30% over the weekend, necessitating the immediate shutting down of the water supply to certain reservoirs.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Water has urged residents to use water sparingly and observe level one-water restrictions, saying the system is severely constrained.

Though Rand Water is pumping and supplying, the increased demand on the entire system has resulted in reservoirs being unable to maintain capacity.

The utility says that with demand outstripping supply, residents and businesses should work with the city to reduce water wastage by at least 10%.

In a statement on Tuesday, the EFF said the water crisis in the province is the culmination of various long-standing issues.

"Addressing this crisis requires a long-term, systematic approach that has been neglected by previous administrations (under the ANC and DA).

“The EFF Gauteng urges all 11 municipalities to implement precautionary measures such as planned restrictions and comprehensive repairs to reduce water wastage.

"We also call for fair treatment in water restriction practices, advocating for equal access to clean water for all residents as a fundamental human right.”
