Girl (10) raped at state-funded disability centre
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
A 10-year-old girl has been raped by four suspects at the Tshwaranang Disability Centre outside Tzaneen in Limpopo.
At the time of the rape the girl was receiving care at the disability centre, which is funded by the Department of Social Development, for an ongoing mental illness.
The incident came to light when a relative of the girl approached a social worker at the facility who then referred the matter to police.
The department’s Witness Tiva says the perpetrators include two men and two minors.
“Our social workers have already started providing psychosocial services to the victim.
“We want to check under what circumstances the sexual abuse happened, we also want to check whether the environment at that centre is still suitable for taking care of the vulnerable people of our society.”
