Government accepts zero percent pay hike

President Jacob Zuma has accepted the reccomendation by the Remuneration Committee that Cabinet members, law makers and judges will not be getting a pay hike.

His spokesman, Bongani Ngqulunga says this is largerly due to the country's slow economy.
"President Jacob Zuma has accepted the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers recommendations for the adjustment of Public Office Bearers annual remuneration for the 2016/2017 financial year," Ngqulunga confirmed.

The Commission recommended that there would be no adjustment to the remuneration for the following Public Office Bearers:
- Members of the National Executive (the President, Deputy President, Ministers and Deputy Ministers)
- Members of the National Parliament
- Members of the Provincial Executive and Legislature
- Judges
- Executive Mayors and Whips of local municipalities
- Traditional Leadership positions like: King, Queen, Deputy Chairperson of Provincial House of Traditional Leaders
The Commission also recommended a 4% cost-of-living adjustment to the remuneration of Local government Municipal Councillors and 6% for all Magistrates.
"Salaries and allowances of different categories of public office bearers are determined by the President, after taking into account, amongst others, the recommendation of the Commission," Ngqulunga added.
